I haven't watched Cannonball Run in a very long time. Thoughts insides.
The movie gets props for the sheer amount of stars involved. Just the inclusion of Dino and Sammy would've been enough, but you got Roger Moore, Dom Fucking Deluise, the legendary John Fiedler, and a shit ton of others. It's awesome. Unfortunately not even Adrienne's Barbeaus and her Lamborghini save it for me. I feel it was one of those movies with great potential, but was hobbled by studio involvment.
That's my thoughts from a standard movie goers view. As an enthusiast(we need a better term), it has a good collection of cars. While some good shots and angles, it suffers from the film being sped up to make the cars look faster. I never approve of that.
Gumball on the other hand is almost perfect in my view. Still a large (though unknown)ensemble cast, silly simple humor, lots of cars and beautiful women. Implementation is key though, and I feel Gumball is far superior on all accounts. Where Gumball focuses on the race, drivers, and cars, Cannonball focuses on the actors and that's about it.
Plus Gumball has Tricia O'Neil(gives Ms. Barbeau a run for her money, but can't find good example) the future captain of the Enterprise C. Your sacfrice was not in vain.
TL DR; Both are awesome, but Gumball is not only a better movie, but a better car movie. In my opinion obviously.

A couple years ago I read Cannonball! by Brock Yates, he talks about the filming of the first movie and what you've said really matches what Brock Yates had to say.

Here's an Amazon link for it, the ISBN codes for it are on the page so you could take those to a library and borrow the book, if they can find it. http://www.amazon.com/Cannonball-Bro…
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
I do highly recommend reading it, hearing about the Cannonball Runs from the man himself is just way too cool to pass up.

Agreed, it's a great "car-guy" read. Things were veeery different back then that's for sure.

Seeing Gumball Rally as a kid, I loved the fact that these cats were really hauling ass through the actual New York City (although the routes they take make no real sense if you're starting from the financial district and heading to California). Big ups to whoever whipped that squad car around the front of Delmonico's , that's one tight corner — smile
